Windscreen Repair or Windscreen Replacement?

Even the smallest crack or chip can quickly escalate into a major problem which can render your vehicle undriveable. This article will help you determine whether the size, depth, position and type of crack on your windscreen means it needs to be repaired or replaced, so you know exactly what is required when contacting a professional to fix the problem.

Why should I fix the crack in my windscreen?

Not only are chips and cracks on a windscreen a major annoyance, but they can also impede your vision when driving which can prove to be fatal. As stated in the Road Traffic Act, driving a vehicle with a chip or crack in the windscreen is a criminal offence which can result in a hefty fine and three points on your driving licence.

Whether your windscreen needs repairing or replacing, we can help!

How do I know whether to get my windscreen repaired or replaced?

Most of the time, chips and cracks on the windscreen can be easily repaired, however, in some cases the damage is so extensive that it is beyond repair and the entire windscreen needs to be replaced. This usually depends on four main factors:

Size and number of cracks

The size of the chip or crack on the windscreen is a major factor in determining whether the windscreen needs to be repaired or replaced:

  • A crack on your windscreen which is smaller than a £2 coin can be repaired
  • If the crack is larger than a £2 coin, or there are a collection of cracks, then the windscreen will need to be replaced

Multiple cracks on a windscreen can be difficult to repair, so the best course of action is to replace the entire windscreen.

Depth of crack

A windscreen is made from three layers of glass; a layer of protective safety glass fitted between two curved sheets of glass. If the crack spreads to the inner layer of the windscreen, the damage cannot be repaired and the entire windscreen will need to be replaced.

Position of damage on windscreen

The position of the crack on the windscreen is another key consideration when deciding whether your windscreen needs to be repaired or replaced. First and foremost, if a chip or crack is impairing the driver’s line of vision and it is no bigger than 10mm, the windscreen can be repaired. However, if it is larger than 10mm, the windscreen will need to be replaced.

If the position of the crack is at least 3 cm from the edge of the windscreen, the windscreen will need to be repaired. However, if the damage is located closer to the edge than 3 cm, the windscreen must be replaced.

Type of crack

Windscreen Chips are typically one of the most common problems to appear. They are usually caused by impact from a small rock which results in a chunk of the glass to be removed. Typically small in size, a chip must be fixed as quickly as possible before it forms a larger crack across your windscreen.

The different types of windscreen cracks include:

Star breaks

A collection of small cracks which resembles a star shape.

Bullseye crack

Its bullseye appearance is caused by a circular object, such as a small stone or rock.

Half moon

Its semicircle appearance is caused by a circular object, such as a small stone or rock.

Combination crack

A chip with a sequence of cracks coming off of it.

Floater crack

Starts in the middle of the windscreen and is caused by sudden changes in temperature.

Edge crack

Occur on the outer 2-3 inches of the windscreen and are the most common cause of windscreen replacements.

Stress crack

Usually caused by variation in temperature, rather than impact from an object.

These cracks can cause different degrees of damage to your windscreen; if you are unsure about how much damage your crack has created, you will need to consult with a technician to find out the best course of action.
